"I have not seen autism with the Amish," said Dr. Frank Noonan, a
family practitioner in Lancaster County, Pa., who has treated thousands of
Amish for a quarter-century. "You'll find
all the other stuff, but we don't find the autism. We're right in the heart
of Amish country and seeing none, and that's just the way it is."
In Chicago,
Homefirst Medical Services treats thousands of never-vaccinated children
whose parents received exemptions through Illinois' relatively permissive
immunization policy. Homefirst's medical director,
Dr. Mayer Eisenstein,
told us he is not aware of any cases of autism in never-vaccinated children;
the national rate is 1 in 175, according to the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention. "We have a fairly large practice," Eisenstein told us. "We
have about 30,000 or 35,000 children that we've taken care of over the
years, and I don't think we have a single case of autism in children
delivered by us who never received vaccines. "We do have enough of a
sample," Eisenstein said. "The numbers are too large to not see it. We would
absolutely know. We're all family doctors. If I have a child with autism
come in, there's no communication. It's frightening. You can't touch them.
It's not something that anyone would miss."
Dr. Jeff
Bradstreet, a Florida family practitioner with ties to families who
homeschool their children for religious reasons, told Age of Autism he has
proposed such a study in that group. "I said I know I can tap into this
community and find you large numbers of unvaccinated homeschooled," said
Bradstreet, "and we can do simple prevalence and incidence studies in
them, and my gut reaction is that you're going to see no autism in this
group."

The Age of Autism: 'Amish bill'
introduced By DAN OLMSTED
Kanner was the
world’s leading expert in child psychiatry. He was the leader in the field at
Johns Hopkins. In 1935, he wrote a textbook that was over 500 pages long that
had detailed, exhaustive descriptions of every possible malady of childhood that
he and his colleagues had ever seen. There’s not one mention of autism in that
1935 textbook.
When he wrote his paper, published
in 1943, he said, “Since 1938 there have come to our attention a number of
children whose condition differed so markedly and uniquely from anything seen
before that each case merits – and I hope will receive – a detailed
investigation of its fascinating peculiarities.” So here is the world’s leading
expert on child psychiatry who has already written a textbook. In 1943 he writes
that in the last five years, we’ve started to see children and they’re unlike
any children we’ve ever seen before.
And he only saw 11 of them. And one
of the things we’ve described is that people came from all over the country, all
over the world to visit at Hopkins. The notion that autism was around at a rate
of 1 in 100 or even a fraction of that is absurd. So the genetic argument at
this point collapses on its face. It doesn’t even meet the basic tests of logic
and common sense.

[2008] Olmsted on Autism: 1979 Wyeth Memo on DPT It looks innocuous enough -- an inter-office memorandum from 1979 about distribution of Wyeth's DPT vaccine. But read closely -- a series of SIDS deaths in Tennessee is prompting Wyeth officials to make sure that vials from a single lot don't get distributed to a single state, county or health department. The memo says "senior management staff" gave the OK to proceed with the plan. I am going to refrain from interpreting this document -- although, if there is an interpretation besides the obvious one that Wyeth didn't want correlations being drawn between DPT vaccine lot numbers and SIDS deaths, I can't think of it right now.
