Auschwitz Death Books
During 1942, the about 100 deaths per day from sickness and
old age increased during the May to October typhus epidemic to about 280 deaths
per day. To prevent the spread of typhus, it was necessary to cremate the
bodies, so in September construction started on the 2 cremation buildings, and
below ground morgues, to handle the increased corpse load.
Until 1991, the true Auschwitz camps death count was unknown. It's alleged
between 750,000 and 1 million people were murdered in the below ground rooms,
and cremated in the two buildings during 1943 and '44.
However the German Auschwitz Death Books, released by the Soviet government in
1991, records names, and causes of death, for people from the 3 main camps,
Auschwitz I, Birkenau, and Monowitz, who died from September 1941, to December,
1943. Causes were primarily typhus, but also other diseases, heart attacks,
