e the beginning of NATO support for the revolution, strongly backed by the
government of Nicolas Sarkozy, Gaddafi openly threatened to reveal details
of his relationship with the former president of France, including the
millions of dollars paid to finance his candidacy at the French 2007
elections.'
Rami El Obeidi, the former head of foreign intelligence for the movement
that overthrew Gaddafi, in his revelations to the Italian newspaper, claimed
that it was the Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad who betrayed Gaddafi, in an
act of self-preservation, in exchange for an easing of French pressure on
his regime. It was then the role of NATO to trace his location.
What is still not very clear is how Gaddafi was traced. While Mr El Obeidi
said he knew that Gaddafi had been tracked through his satellite
telecommunications system as he talked to some of his loyalists who had fled
to Syria (mainly Yusuf Shakir), other media reports stated that he was
talking to the Syrian president (ref. Daily Mail). Shashank Joshi, a
research fellow at the Royal United Services Institute in London thinks it’s
"plausible that that intelligence was supplied by the Assad regime, as is
alleged".
With the conflicting reports we find ourselves asking a few questions: Did
really Al-Assad betray Gaddafi or was it just an interception of a call made
between him and Gaddafi or other loyalists? Has the Daily Mail corrupted El
Obeidi revelations or was it El Corriere della Serra's fault?
